Recently we have attended the North Lincolnshire Council Community Champion Awards, which celebrates and recognises the achievements of our local community. S Smith & Co sponsored the ‘Young Sports Achiever of the Year’ award, the shortlisted nominees for the category were Jessica Keeton and Archie Yeo. Both nominees had fantastic achievements, but overall Archie Yeo won the award for Young Sports Achiever of the Year.
Archie has excelled in athletics with his chosen discipline of the Long Jump. He has successfully broken the North of England record, which has stood since 1984, with a jump of 7.33 meters. Archie competed in the England Championship and earned Gold, making him the England Champion with a new personal best of 7.49 meters, which was only 1 cm short of the championship record. This jump saw him finish this season in fourth place in the UK and fifth in Europe of all under seventeen long jumpers ever recorded. On top of all his training, Archie continued to work hard on his education, achieving twelve GCSEs at A* or A grade.
The runner up, Jessica Keeton, has been a member of Scunthorpe Amateur Boxing Club for a little over a year. Her achievements in this time are incredible. She has boxed ten bouts winning them all and has achieved the titles of National Champion, England Talent Pathway and the current European Gold Medalist.
