National Apprenticeship Week

National Apprenticeship Week offers us the chance to celebrate the achievements of our apprentices and raise awareness of the career opportunities available to those looking to start their professional journey.

Apprenticeships provide a valuable opportunity for individuals to specialise in areas they are passionate about, while gaining hands-on experience. We believe in nurturing talent from within our team, investing in the next generation to help them develop their skills and expertise.

Our team are all at different stages of their training journey, from Level 2 AAT to Level 4 AAT. The apprenticeship programme allows individuals to gain their qualification through McArthur Dean Training, as well as developing on the foundations and learning new skills within the workplace. We asked our team what they thought about their apprenticeship:

What led you to choose an apprenticeship?

GraceDuring my time at college, I enjoyed accounting and I knew that this was something I wanted to have a career in. Initially I did apply for universities, but I knew that I was not going to enjoy them as the study side is not something I enjoy. I knew deep down I only wanted to go for the “uni life.” My family told me to look at apprenticeships to see if there were any in the accounting industry to see what they were offering. Looking into the job roles and what would be involved, the more I became convinced that an apprenticeship in accounting was the perfect fit for me. A hands-on job and work environment outweighed the studying university route.

Joshua – In school I always learned best when I was participating in a task and I was more of a visual learner, which helped me decide on choosing the path of an apprentice.

Annabel – What led me to choosing to get an apprenticeship is that I find learning on the job much easier. I enjoy the hands-on experience and appreciate gaining practical knowledge that I can apply right away. This way of learning suits me perfectly, as it allows me to see how things work in real life and helps me grow my skills.

Do you enjoy your apprenticeship and why?

NathanThe thing I like most about my apprenticeship is that I was able to go straight into working with a team where we can learn from and help each other.

What advantages do you think an apprenticeship has?

Nathan – The biggest advantage of an apprenticeship must be that you are able to gain experience whilst learning and working through your qualifications.

Grace – Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for you to learn on the job. You are gaining practical experience with on-the-job training, learning new skills whilst earning a salary. It is an excellent opportunity for people who prefer hands-on learning, want to experience the work environment, and see if this is something they want to pursue as a job.

JoshuaI think becoming an apprentice has many advantages as at the end of the apprenticeship you are likely to have a full-time job. You will achieve the same qualifications you would achieve at college, but you will also have the work experience and practical knowledge.

What advice would you offer someone who is thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

Annabel – If you are thinking about doing an apprenticeship, it can be a great way to gain real-life experience while learning on the job. Look into different training programs that match your interests and career goals. Always remember that nothing is permanent and it’s okay to have second thoughts or change your mind later. Having an apprenticeship is a chance for you to learn and see what you enjoy doing so if it does not feel right, you can always look for other options. Your career path is up to you, so take your time to find what suits you best.
