National Apprenticeship Week

Across the country this week, we are celebrating National Apprenticeship Week.

As a business, the apprenticeship scheme has been a huge success to us. It has enabled employees to develop skills and qualifications through onsite and/or virtual training to progress their career in accountancy. Since the pandemic, our apprentices have had to adapt from ordinary onsite training to fully remote training.

We thought of what better way to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, than asking our apprentice, Emmie Taylor, how she is finding her apprenticeship so far.

Emmie Taylor

Why did you choose an apprenticeship at S Smith & Co?

Working within an accountancy department has always been what I have set my eyes on for the future, then when the opportunity came up to work at S Smith & Co I couldn’t say no. To work in an environment where helping clients is the number one priority and such lovely people to assist you with anything you need sounded like the job for me.

How are you finding the AAT Level 2 Course?

I Started my course by attending McArthur Dean Training once a week but then due to covid-19 it was then arranged through a zoom meeting. With the other students and my tutor, Jan this change was made in the best way possible. With McArthur Dean I feel they help me on a one-to-one bases rather than in a group which really benefits me, it allows me to really understand the unit we are studying and not to hesitate to ask anything.

How did you find adapting to working remotely instead of going into the collage?

Going into the collage was always the best thing to do in my opinion but due to the current situation it would make it difficult to go in, therefore working remotely was the best option. Being in a class via zoom was very strange I will admit but after settling in it became the new normal which I was learning just as much as when I go into McArthur dean.

How do you think the apprenticeship is helping your development within the workplace?

Having both the learning and the workplace is having an amazing impact of how far I have come throughout this. I feel the learning aspect builds up my confidence and fills me with the knowledge I need to complete the day-to-day jobs within the workplace, and the workplace is where I can put all my training into action.
